2.1 About The Book

This textbook has been developed for third-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Applied Cognitive Science course (PSY3009f) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cape Town.

It draws on freely available online material, with all illustrations either licensed under Creative Commons or used in accordance with fair use principles. The textbook is a collaborative product of the Applied Cognitive Science teaching team.

2.2 Notes on how to use this book

By now, you may have noticed that this is not a traditional printed textbook. It is written in html format, which allows for the integration of a variety of additional interactive materials. These include hyperlinks to supplementary articles, definitions, glossary entries, and suggestions for further readings.

  • Note that all images in this textbook can be enlarged by hovering your mouse over them and clicking. To zoom out, click the X in the corner of the zoomed image.

  • If you hover with your mouse over an in-text citation, a window will appear displaying the full reference. These will often be clickable, too, allowing you to access the original source directly (assuming you have internet connection).

  • Some sections of the material contains more advanced content, and are flagged accordingly. You may choose to skip over this material on your initial reading; however, you are encouraged to return to them once you have a stronger grasp of the foundational material.

  • There are multiple choice questions (MCQ’s) at the end of each chapter designed to assess your knowledge of the content. Your score will be displayed upon completion of the test. Use the provided feedback to evaluate whether you should revisit the material.

  • We have made considerable effort to integrate the new AI technologies into the book. First, you will find a section at the end of each chapter that allows you to submit written answers to questions, and to receive feedback from an AI agent on the quality of your answer. Second, you will note that there is a round, blue icon with a cloud in the middle of it, This is an AI chatbot, and you can interact with it to explore the chapter content. Note, though, that this is best done after you have read the chapter. It assumes you have read the chapter, and the interactions are only meaningful if you have
